Hirosaki park is one of the top three cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, which is often acclaimed as being the best in Japan, is held annually during the cherry blossom season from late April to early May. It attracts about two million people from inside and outside Japan who come out of their love of cherry blossoms.
The park has about 2,600 trees of about 50 varieties, primarily Yoshino cherry trees as well as others including weeping cherries and double-flowered cherries. It is said that this stems from when Tsugaru feudal retainers ordered 25 trees from Kyoto in 1715. The branches laden with many cherry blossoms hang down during the blooming period, allowing you to see the flowers up close.
The mirrorlike surface of Hirosaki Castle's outer moat reflects the cherry trees on its banks, creating dazzling beauty. The sight of the fallen blossoms is famous for further enchanting people. The Hana Ikada (“flower rafts,” when flowers flow together along the moat in a shape resembling a raft) and Sakura no Judan (“cherry blossom carpets,” when cherry blossoms cover the moat surface) were selected for the popular Facebook page “Global scenery to see before you die” and went viral. The illuminated cherry blossoms at night are also wondrous. The gorgeous cherry blossoms and the tower of Hirosaki Castle create a beautiful Japanese aesthetic.
The 300-meter long Cherry Blossom Tunnel at the west moat is also a superb scenic point. The rows of cherry trees are a highlight, and walking beneath the tunnel of fluffily blooming cherry trees puts you in a dreamy state of mind, like being in a fairy tale. The branches laden with many cherry blossoms hang down during the blooming period, allowing you to see the flowers up close. It’s also recommended to take photographs from the Shunyo-bashi Bridge area.
