The Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival is held annually in February in Hirosaki Park, which is a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot. During the cold winter night, the snow-covered Hirosaki Castle towers and old pine trees are illuminated, inviting you to a profoundly beautiful world. The festival is one of the five great snow festivals of Michinoku (Tohoku) and attracts over 200,000 visitors each year.
Wondrous scenery unfolds with lanterns of various sizes, about 200 snow sculptures, 300 mini snow huts lit by candlelight, and the illuminated Hirosaki Castle.
The projection mapping that uses the snow sculptures as screens is a must-see! It is an exciting spectacle featuring pure white snow and light.
Numerous events to enjoy the snow are also held, including the Tsugaru Nishiki-e Cloister decorated with pictures displayed at the summer Neputa Matsuri, the large snow sculptures modeled on historic buildings, the snow slide, and winter fireworks.
