After the National Tohoku Craftswork Institute (Tohoku Kogei Shidosho) obtained the Tamamushi lacquerware patent, Tohoku Kogei Co., Ltd. started manufacturing this lacquerware. The name "Tamamushi-nuri" is derived from the beautiful color and luster of the lacquer, which resembles the iridescent wings of a jewel beetle.
