The Jozenji Street Jazz Festival is an outdoor music festival held each September in Sendai, the “City of Trees”, in Miyagi prefecture. Performance stages are set-up throughout the city centre with the main venue located on Jozenji Street lined with its signature rows of Zelkova trees. The 2018 festival attracted an audience of 720,000 people enjoying live music played by 779 groups, 5,231 amateur and professional performers in all, on 50 stages across the city.
Although the event is known as a jazz festival, it caters for a wide range of musical genres including jazz, rock, world music and gospel. Audience members wander from stage to stage to enjoy their preferred musical varieties.
The festival is free of charge and popular with people of all ages. Along with regional specialties and local sake, a wide range of international food and drink is available at food stalls located in the city’s parks.
