Just a one-minute walk from Kamaishi Station, Sun Fish Kamaishi is a market offering the freshest seafood, including Kamaishi sea urchin roe and scallops that are said to be among the sweetest along this stretch of the coastline. The market also offers agricultural produce from the land and has a range of restaurants too.
At the “Seafood BBQ Station,” customers can grill and barbecue the fresh items they have bought in the market’s shops, including everything from shellfish to dried squid, vegetables, meat, and fish. For just 500 yen you can rent a full barbecue set, including everything you need: a gas stove, tongs, gloves, chopsticks, plates and soy sauce! Nokke-don is an event that takes place approximately once a month. Customers first buy a bowl of steamed white rice for 200 yen (including a bowl of miso soup), and then go round the stalls in the building, buying the type of seafood that they like to put on the rice (which is why it is referred to as nokke, or to “pile up”).
Various other menu items typical of a fishing port are also popular, including Kamaishi ramen, a local speciality ramen made with extremely thin crinkly noodles and a soy sauce-based tanrei soup that has a beautiful amber colour.
Sun Fish Kamaishi is linked by a footbridge to Sea Plaza Kamaishi just across the road, which is also popular for souvenirs and shopping.
