Kesennuma Fish Market
Kesennuma Fish Market is a fish market in Kesennuma Fishing Port which boasts one of the leading catches of fish in Japan. Lots of skipjack tuna, other tunas, marlin, Pacific saury and sharks are caught here. The catch of fresh skipjack tuna is the largest in Japan. This skipjack tuna is especially fatty from September until the last catch of the season. It is often sought after from around Japan as tasty modori (return) skipjack tuna.
You can see impressive auctions from the viewing deck on the second floor. It is really worth seeing when there is a large catch. We recommend you visit this fish market from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. when you will see catches and bidding. This depends on the catches, so there are times where there are no fish. However, you can enjoy the sight of seeing fishing boats anchored and black-tailed gulls flying around from the roof on the third floor at such times.
