Tendo Onsen

See shogi pieces everywhere! An easy-to-get-to hot spring district

Tendo is the largest producer of shogi pieces in Japan. Title matches featuring professional shogi players (e.g., the Ryuo Tournament) are held almost every year at Tendo Onsen. This has made it one of the sacred places visited by shogi fans. Accordingly, you can see designs with the motif of shogi pieces everywhere - on sidewalks, footbaths, manhole covers and bridges. Why don't you enjoy a stroll through this unique hot spring district while searching for shogi pieces? The shogi piece writing experience is also popular. This is an experience in which you can write down letters on shogi pieces with a brush. (This experience requires reservations.) You must visit the Tendo Shogi Historical Museum where shogi pieces showing off the skills of shogi craftsmen on display.

There are many fun things to do in each season. The weeping cherry blossoms of the River Kuratsu that flows near the hot spring district are lit up in the spring. Tourists orchards open one after another - cherries from mid-June, grapes from mid-August and apples from late September. There is a marathon in November with all-you-can-eat La France pears. The All-Japan Lip Beauty Contest is held from June to September. Guests in the accommodation facilities of Tendo Onsen can participate regardless of age or gender! Complete your application by applying lipstick and then pressing the shape of your lips on the provided application form. You may get the opportunity to receive the title of having beautiful lips.

The hot spring is a colorless and transparent sulfate hot spring with a sleek feel. You can expect a beautiful skin effect because it contains lots of sodium and calcium. Tendo Onsen can also be easily reached from other popular spots: it is approximately 10 minutes by car to Jakushoji Temple famous for marriage and Risshakuji temple popularly known as Yamadera (Mountain Temple) and approximately 1 hour by car to the crater of the Zao Mountain Range. This makes it the perfect base for sightseeing in Yamagata.
