Tohoku History Museum

A history museum with something to interest people of all ages

In the main exhibition hall, you will find exhibits on nine distinct historic periods from the Palaeolithic age to the modern age. In the three themed exhibition rooms you can delve deeper into specific aspects of Tohoku history: “folk culture and folk crafts,” “private collections,” and “arts, crafts and history.” Each year three to four special exhibitions are held in the special exhibition hall.

The Children’s History Museum offers a fully interactive experience so that visitors can touch, use and listen, as well as simply looking. There is also an interactive theatre where you can participate as the video progresses, worktables where you can try out ancient techniques and skills, and a personal computer space that enables users to operate original software. The worktables are particularly popular, as visitors can try a number of experiences based on 11 different themes, including “cutting,” “weaving,” and “braiding.” The “Making Fire” experience lets visitors use various tools designed to create fire, including a bow-drill and a spinning fire starter. How many seconds will it take until you can make a fire?
