Autumn colors of the Kakkonda River

Nature’s art of interwoven yellow, red, and orange colors

Autumn colors of the Kakkonda River
Located in the upper reaches of the Kakkonda River, which is part of Towada-Hachimantai National Park, there are about 8,000 hectares of virgin beech forests along the approximately 10 kilometer valley from Genbudo Cave (Genbu no Oiwaya), a scenic spot designated as a national Natural Monument, to Takinoue Onsen. You can enjoy the truly beautiful autumn colors woven by nature, featuring the yellow of the beech trees mixed with the reds and oranges of the momiji and kaede maple trees! (The best time to see the autumn leaves is from mid to late October.) Because the area is accessible by car from the Nagayama Road, you can enjoy the autumn leaves while driving. There are parking lots in some areas, so you can also get out of your car and take a walk. There are also ice cream shops, soba noodle restaurants, and hot spring facilities such as Genbu Onsen and Takinoue Onsen, making this perfect for a roundtrip sightseeing excursion!
