Aomori Nebuta Matsuri

The Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is one of the three great festivals of Tohoku and is designated as one of Japan's Important Intangible Folk Cultural Properties. During the festival, floats known as Ningyo Nebuta are followed by dancers known as Haneto, who dance while shouting “Rassera rassera.” 
The festival is held annually from 2 to 7 August. The Nebuta floats wait on the route from 2 to 6 August, and then start moving all at once. The Nebuta that win prizes head the parade on the final day on 7 August, and the Kaijo Unko, that sees six prize-winning Nebuta put aboard boats that cruise through Aomori Bay, begins at night. The Kaijo Unko is the festival finale that coincides with the Aomori Fireworks Festival, during which over 10,000 fireworks are launched. 
Additionally, one of the best parts of the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri is that anyone can participate in the festival as a Haneto dancer if they just follow the rules. You can buy a costume at a local department store or even rent one, so participating in the dance is easier than you might think.
