Akiu Hot Spring

More than 1,000 years of history since the hot spring was found

Akiu Hot Spring
Akiu OnsenThe history of Akiu Hot Spring is more than 1,000 years old, dating back to the Kofun period (300-538 CE). It is said that when the 29th Emperor Kinmei (531-539) suffered from a minor skin disease, he bathed in hot water brought from Akiu and was fully cured. The emperor said, "Look at this bird, it has no trace" (in this poem in Japanese, "Natori no Miyu"(Hot Spring in Natori) is used as a hidden word), and praised the efficacy of the hot spring and gave it the title of Miyu (an honorific word for hot spring). Since then, Akiu has been known as one of the Three Hot Springs of Japan along with Shinano and Inukai, attracting people seeking bath cures from all over Japan. In the Warring States period (1467-1615), Lord Date Masamune visited Akiu often to relieve his fatigue, and Akiu Onsen, with its magnificent nature and beneficial hot spring water, has been historically loved by people as a place of recuperation since ancient times.
