In the Great East Japan Earthquake, Fukushima experienced a combined disaster unprecedented in the world due to the nuclear power plant accident in addition to the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami. The museum is unique in that it exhibits many materials related to the nuclear accident, such as the situation at the power plant immediately after the accident, the long-term and widespread evacuation of residents, and the impact of radiation on the lives of residents of the prefecture. In addition to the exhibits, visitors can experience a variety of programs, such as oral presentations by storytellers who recount the situation at the time of the disaster and their experiences of evacuation, and fieldwork to inspect the site.
