The ice trees of Mt. Moriyoshi, counted among Japan's three great ice trees alongside those of Mount Zaō in Yamagata Prefecture and Mount Hakkōda in Aomori Prefecture.
At the Mt. Moriyoshi Ani Ski Resort, visitors can view the ice trees, also called snow monsters, which only form under specific conditions, from early January to early March.
A key feature of Moriyoshi Mountain's tree ice is the ability to enjoy it privately with family or friends, taking your time without worrying about the clock. This is because visitors travel to the summit station building near the Tree Ice Plain (viewing area) via a 6-person gondola that operates continuously during business hours. Furthermore, the summit station houses the Moriyoshi Mountain Visitor Center “Platto,” allowing anyone to easily enjoy the surrounding tree ice from indoors.
Furthermore, during the ice-covered tree viewing period, ice-covered tree guides are stationed at the summit station. They provide rentals for boots, snowshoes, traditional Japanese snowshoes (wakanjiki), and poles, and also hold ice-covered tree classes explaining the mechanisms behind their formation.
We invite you to experience the splendor of this natural artwork created by Mount Moriyoshi.
※ Please wear warm clothing, including cold-weather gear, when viewing the ice-covered trees.
