Echigo-Johu Yukisarashi Tour

The textiles known as Echigo-jofu are works of art born of the snow. Possessing a long history, the fabric has been in production for approximately 1200 years.In 2009 Echigo-jofu was the first dyeing and weaving technique in Japan to be designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage element.On fine weather days in late February through March, Echigo-jofu and Shiozawa-tsumugi silk pongee are spread out on the snow and naturally bleached through the yukisarashi process. The traditional technique of whitening fabric by the power of the sun and snow is an ode to the coming of spring in this region.Reservations required.
