Towada City Hall Street

The area was a horse-producing region before the war, and the Imperial Army's Military Horse Replenishment Department was established in the surrounding area with vast fields and many stables. The horse market played an important role in the prosperity of the area until the disbandment of the Military Horse Replenishment Department after World War II. Towada City Government Office Street is the main road from the main gate of the headquarters of the Military Horse Replenishment Department to the headquarters building, and the pine trees and cherry trees planted on both sides of the street are all that remain of those days. Taking advantage of this orderly street, the street was created as an urban planning street in 1969, with a total length of 1.1 km and a width of 36 meters. In addition to 100-year-old red pines (168 trees) and Yoshino cherry trees (165 trees), flower beds are arranged in the tree-planting zone, and more than 40 national, prefectural, and municipal government offices line both sides of the street, which is designated as an "office district" under the City Basic Law together with Kumamoto City and Marugame City. The Kanchogaidori was selected as one of the "100 Best Roads in Japan" by the Ministry of Construction on August 10, 1986, and in 1992, it was selected as one of the "New 100 Views of Japan" (Traveler's Notebook) as Koma Kaido (Koma Road).
