Shiwahiko-jinja Shrine / Shiogama-jinja Shrine

A shrine enshrining the guardian deity who opened up Tohoku

Shiwahiko-jinja Shrine / Shiogama-jinja Shrine
Shiogama-jinja Shrine has long been revered by ordinary people for protecting the Tohoku region as the most important shrine of Mutsu Province. Originally, only Shiogama-jinja Shrine was enshrined. However, Shiwahiko-jinja Shrine was relocated inside the grounds in the Meiji period (1868 to 1912). It now stands as Shiwahiko-jinja Shrine and Shiogama-jinja Shrine. The main shrine, hall of worship and stone-made torii gate were designated as important cultural properties of the nation in 2012.
The best time to see the shiogamazakura cherry blossoms in the grounds of Shiogama-jinja Shrine is usually around April. These have been designated as a natural monument of the nation. Furthermore, Shiogama Minato Festival, which is held in July, is considered one of the three major boat festivals of Japan. It is a grand festival with a fireworks display on the eve of the festival and a parade on the actual day of the event.
Shiogama-jinja Shrine Museum is located on the grounds of the shrine. It collects and stores historical materials relating to Shiogama-jinja Shrine. It also exhibits and releases these materials. You can see the long-lasting history of Shiogama-sama and precious cultural properties that tell the story of that deity with armor, paintings, handicrafts and ancient documents.
