Former main branch of the 59th National Bank (Aomori Bank Memorial Hall)

Beautiful white and mint green Western architecture

Former main branch of the 59th National Bank (Aomori Bank Memorial Hall)
The 59th National Bank was established in 1879. The building was relocated and made the Aomori Bank Memorial Hall.
It is a beautiful white and mint green Renaissance-style building with stately Western architecture that has been designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government of Japan. Look for the decorative tower on the top, which also functions as an observation deck. The tip is bulb-shaped like those found in Indian temples. The designer, Sakichi Horie, is a master designer of many Western-style buildings.
Tours of the interior are also available. The interior is decorated in a classical, enchanting design. Of note is the beautiful Japanese leather paper used for the wonderful ceiling. There is also a substantial display of old bills and coins.
