Oyaku-en (Aizu Matsudaira Clan Garden)

Oyaku-en is located 15 minutes on foot to the east of Tsuruga Castle. It is a Japanese garden that has been designated a scenic spot of Japan. It is said that the beginnings of this garden lie in the construction by a former feudal lord of a villa in this area where a miraculous spring once spouted out.
There is a medicinal herb garden from which its name is derived. Including the Aizu specialty of medicinal use ginseng, approximately 400 species of medicinal herbs and trees are planted in the garden. Moreover, you can see various flowers in each season with the blooming of tree peonies in the spring, lotuses in the summer and Japanese anemone in the fall.
Ochaya Goten in the garden is a wooden thatched roof one-story tea ceremony arbor built approximately 300 years ago. The pillars still carry fresh sword cuts leftover from the time of the Boshin War (1868 to 1869).
