Okuno Hosomichi (Naruko)

The path Matsuo Basho walked with his disciple Sora. Why not walk along it, imagining the times of old, passing through the “Urazen Pass” where Basho struggled to cross and the difficult “Nakayama Pass”?

Kajitani-sawa, Nakayama, and Onikobe at key points along the Dewa and Ugo highways.


　The great haiku master Matsuo Bashō passed through here in May 1689 (Genroku 2) during his journey along the “Narrow Road to the Deep North” with his disciple Sora. To preserve and pass this legacy to future generations, the approximately 5.2 km stretch from Urezen Seki to Sakaitan in Yamagata Prefecture has been restored and maintained as the “Narrow Road to the Deep North.”
