Tashiro Island

An island with the legend of the Cat God and many cats

Tashiro Island, located about 50 minutes from Ishinomaki, is also known as Cat Island and is home to several hundred felines.

The island is home to two villages: Odomari and Nitoda. Accommodations and campsites are also available, so you can enjoy fishing and outdoor activities.

Tashiro Island is an island surrounded by cobalt blue waters and beautiful scenic nature.

Cats are very important on this island as guardians of great fishing. There is even a ""Cat God (Neko Shrine)"" in the center of the island.

With one of the best fishing grounds in the world, the island has developed extensive coastal and offshore fishing. Locals still practice a unique and traditional fishing method of using large set nets in the surrounding waters.

Also on the island is a shell mound designated as a prefectural historic site, where pottery, stone tools, and bone tools from the early-Jomon period have been excavated.

The climate is mild, with little difference in temperature. Even during the harsh winter months, the average monthly temperature never drops below 0 degrees Celsius, making it easy to spend time here throughout the year. The Japanese bay tree, a large evergreen broad-leaved tree, grows naturally here.
