Yokote Masuda Manga Museum (Yokote, Akita Prefecture)

A manga-themed museum boasting the largest collection of original manga drawings in Japan

Yokote City Masuda Manga Museum opened in 1995 as Japan's first manga-themed museum. After two years of extensive renovation work, it reopened in May 2019, on the day Japan's new Reiwa era began.

The main attraction of the museum is the newly built Manga-no-Kura collection. The exhibition room houses, preserves, and displays about 400,000 valuable original manga drawings by famous Japanese artists, including Takao Yaguchi, a local manga artist from Masuda known for his work on Tsurikichi Sanpei (Fisherman Sanpei).

In the Permanet Exhibition Room, which features a beech tree, the original drawings of 180 artists are displayed alternately. You can also search for some classic manga at the Manga History section.

There are three other exhibition rooms, including the Manga Culture Exhibition Room, where you can learn about manga culture and manga production, and the Special Exhibition Room, where various special exhibitions are held with a focus on original drawings.

In addition to the exhibitions, the Manga Library boasts a collection of more than 25,000 books, and the Manga Café is where you can enjoy manga-related dishes. You could easily spend an entire day at this museum considering all it has to offer.
