Tashirojima is known as “Cat Island,” and many cats live on the island. It is said that in the old days, the behavior of cats was used to determine whether fishing was good or bad, and there is even a “cat shrine” on the island where cats are enshrined. In April 2009, the “Cat Shrine” was selected as one of the “100 Treasures of the Island” by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
