Tsugaru Kogin Sashimi Experience Hirosaki Kogin Kenkyujo

Tsugaru's kogin stitching evolved from "shishiko," a technique of reinforcing farmers' stray linen clothes by stitching them with cotton threads since the Edo period (1603-1868).Kogin is made of cotton thread on linen cloth and embroidered patterns are formed geometrically according to certain rules, and are divided into three types: "east kogin," "west kogin," and "three striped kogin.

 Today's kogin is not for stray clothes, but is utilized for neckties, handbags, wallets, etc., and is highly popular as a folk art.
Participants will learn the technique of Tsugaru Kogin Sashi, a traditional craft of Aomori Prefecture, and make coasters.Among the various named patterns, we will try the "cat's paw" pattern this time.

Tsugaru Kogin Sashimi, the traditional sashimi craft of Aomori Prefecture. It is said to have originated when farmers, who were only allowed to wear linen kimonos, sewed threads to fill in the lines of the cloth to reinforce and keep warm,

Hirosaki Kogin Kenkyujo was founded in 1942 as a homespun company.

Since then, the company has conducted basic research on Tsugaru Kogin Sashimi, and aims to manufacture products that meet the needs of the times in order to preserve traditional materials and techniques and pass them on to the next generation.

It also focuses on promotional activities through hands-on production.

The building that houses the Kimura Sangyo Kenkyujo (Kimura Industrial Research Institute) was designated a National Important Cultural Property in 2021.
