This spectacular waterfall with a drop of 55 meters and a width of six meters is truly stunning! The water flowing down the falls with a roaring noise has a powerful force like that of thunder. It is no surprise that it is called one of the three major waterfalls of Japan.
In addition to viewing it from an observation platform, you can also take the trail down by the side of Fudotaki-bashi Bridge and go to the basin. The path is rather steep, so we recommend you visit with comfortable shoes. The splashing of the falls as the water flows down turns to mist in the area around the basin. This means you can further feel the power in the large waterfall looking up.
The adjacent Akiu-otaki Fudoson is surrounded by dense greenery. The grounds are home to large gingko trees that have been designated as trees to be conserved by the city. These trees turn a bright golden color in the fall.
Akiu-otaki Falls freezes over in the coldest period of the year around early February. This countless icicles hanging down from the rocks reveal a solemn beauty distinctive of winter.
