Hoshitoge Rice Terraces

Hoshitoge no Tanada

A must-visit location in early spring and late autumn for the incredible landscape of terraced fields reflecting on the rice paddy waters

Located in Tokamachi city, Niigata, the Hoshitoge Rice Terraces are famous for their scenic terraced rice fields and have been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful villages in Japan.

When the paddies are filled with water photographers come here to catch picturesque reflections. If you visit in the early morning, you may have a chance to see an illusionary landscape of misty clouds over the terraced fields.

Visitors come throughout the year to see the area’s scenic beauty and enjoy the seasonal colours of the fields from the verdant green of summer to the pure white of winter. The landscape is fantastic with its early morning mists, the golden glow of the evening sun and the twinkling stars of night. You will find it hard to tear yourself away!

Please note the following:

The terraced fields are not for trespassing.

The fields are the private lands of local farmers producing their rice crops.

Please do not enter the farmlands or any roped-off area.

Please park your vehicle only in the designated car park.

Please ensure you take your rubbish with you as there are no bins.

Please respect the local farm workers at all times. Thank you!
