Akita Prefecture: Make and taste local Kiritanpo rice dumplings

In Odate City, Akita Prefecture—the home of the local specialty Kiritanpo—you can try making and enjoying this tasty treat.

You will begin the experience by making "Tanpo"—rice cakes made by mashing rice and shaping it into cylinders around cedar skewers before grilling. Enjoy one straight from the skewer, coated in a specially prepared miso paste.

You'll also cook a hotpot using Kiritanpo—freshly cooked Tanpo cut into bite-sized chunks—and Hinai Jidori chicken, best enjoyed fresh and piping hot.

There are two shops where you can make your own Kiritanpo: Yoki na Kaasan no Mise (The Cheerful Mother's Shop), where you will be taught by local farmers' wives, and Beniyama Kiritanpo Kobo, which won the Kiritanpo Grand Prix at Odate's Kiritanpo Festival.
