Shinjo Hometown History Center
The Shinjo Hometown History Center introduces Shinjo City from the perspectives of history, culture, festivals, and folklore.
It permanently displays works by Shinjo-born Living National Treasures: the metalworker Mr. Houseki Okuyama and the Western-style painter Mr. Zenjirō Chikaoka.
Mr. Okuyama's elegant and beautiful silver vessels alone, among the exhibited pieces, are valued at a total of 100 million yen as artworks.
The stained glass at Sendai Station, a classic meeting spot in Sendai. Yoshijiro Chikaoka gained fame for creating the original artwork for this piece.
Alongside Chikaoka's works featuring Western architecture, mother-and-child figures, and the snow country landscape, sketches and art reference materials are also on display.
The museum complex also includes: * The Shinjo Float Museum, displaying two outstanding floats used in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage “Shinjo Festival.” * The Snow Country Folk Museum, housing approximately 10,000 folk tools (the second largest collection in Tohoku) and a recreated corner of a house and shop from the 1940s-1950s. * The Shinjo City History and Folklore Museum, exhibiting archaeological materials and items from the Shinjo Domain era.
Additionally, we hold live storytelling performances every Sunday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Enjoy our lively tales of old. (Closed December–January)
※Due to the July 2024 heavy rain disaster, only some exhibition rooms are currently open.
